As I recently mentioned, everyone says to visit the beautiful Pico do Arieriro (the third highest point in Madeira) at sunrise but THEY ARE WRONG. There has been some PR-twist gone wrong, for island safari companies to sell you sunrise and some other event.
Instead, you definitely definitely have to go at sunset. Well a couple of hours before sunset, enjoy golden hour, sunset and then blue hour. It's absolutely phenomenal!
Plus, it's far easier to get parked and quieter as everyone arrives at sunrise when it's busy and then tends to leave. The only cars are those hardcore hikers doing the Pico to Pico hike on the way back!
It was crazy, being above the clouds and seeing the golden light hit it! We even saw some wee wild partridges right on to the top of a ridgeline.
One top tip, bring a headlamp if you plan on waiting out and enjoying the full sunset as you will need it to get back to the car. We were prepared but we saw a few folk with phones out!
