The thatched houses in the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis are definitely worth seeing.
Blackhouses are the traditional rural dwellings, with thatched roofs and packed earth floors - sometimes with space for animals inside. They became abandoned over time, with residents moving to modern council provided houses.
However the house at Gearrannan were restored to their previous traditional glory and turned into a conservation village for visitors and people can even book to stay there!
When we visited it really reminded me of the Faroe Islands and particularly the turf roofs in the also abandoned village of Saksun - look here!
