One of the more unusual places we visited in Madeira was the Japenese Gardens at Monte Palace.  It's such a good day and I would totally recommend it - there's a few activities to run together which can make it such a fun (albeit tad expensive day).

The first thing you want to do is get the cable car from Funchal - you get it from the cable car station on the shore front in the city.  It's really easy to get to, although be prepared to queue if there is a cruise ship de-boarding!

The views on the cable car are really quite spectacular - so imposing and literally takes you through the clouds.

Then when you arrive at the top, go explore the Monte Palace Japanese Gardens - it's really impressive.  Kind of a rainforest/jungle with some Japanese architecture and information shared throughout, highlighting the relationship between Madeira and Japan.

Top Tip - there is a cafe right at the top of the gardens, and one right at the bottom (where you can also sample some free Madeira wine).  However, the top one by the entry is a gizillion times better than the one at the bottom, and for the same items (like fries or a drink) the top one is actually cheaper!

However, wander, walk enjoy... and then when you are finished get the traditional toboggan rides down the hill!
