Eilean Glas Lighthouse, Isle of Scalpay

Eilean Glas Lighthouse on the Isle of Scalpay (part of the Outer Hebrides and just a bridge from Isle of Lewis and Harris) is an incredibly scenic lighthouse! 

The red and white lighthouse is so picturesque and lovely - if you are visiting the Isle of Lewis and Harris I would really recommend crossing a tiny bridge to get to the Isle of Scalpay. 

Then the roads get super tiny and windy on Scalpay, and there isn't that many car parking spaces for the lighthouse - so you might want to get there early! 

Then when you parked there is a really well maintained path to go to the lighthouse itself, which took us a couple of hours.  It's a really nice walk and the lighthouse really is lovely. 

However, I would note that the locals weren't so friendly... there was several farmers/farm workers we passed at the start of the path and they seemed to have a problem with visitors!  They weren't controlling their dogs and actually let two of them attack/snap at Tilly for a good 3 or 4 minutes.  Luckily I had picked Hetty up as I didn't like the look of the collies, and Matt was able to drop Tilly's lead and trust that she would outrun them.  

However it was fully avoidable and the farmers were making a point of ignoring their dogs and us, even when their dogs were nipping at ours.  To be honest it was a disaster waiting to happen and I could see they were doing the same for other visitors, including those with dogs and children. 

As someone with a farming/rural/countryside background we both fully understand how to be responsible visitors, and we were doing so.  It was really disappointing to see this, particularly when visiting an approved attraction, which you pay and add money to the local community! 

There must be an interesting attitude to visitors, even when paying/adding to the local community!
