Phone Interview Tips

This is the final post in my mini-series focussing on working life!  First we had my Skype Interview Tips and then The Best Affordable Work Trousers - What I Wear To Work In Winter.

Now it's my top tips for phone interviews.

There is obviously a little overlap with skype interviews but I hope to be able to get a few different tips in there.

Pick Your Environment
Pick a sensible place to get your interview on- private and quiet with somewhere to sit and lay all your things out in front of you, like on a desk.

Smile
Make a point of smiling during your interview, it lightens your tone and you need to inject some personality into your voice considering there are no non-verbal body language signs for the interviewer to judge you on!

Use Your Hands
Just like smiling, using your hands to gesticulate will help you relax and come across as more natural.

Have Everything On Hand
This means print everything off!  Have your CV in front of you, a list of any important skills you want to mention and some of your research.  Also this means making sure your phone is fully charged and ready to go!

Don't UM
Although this is a golden rule in any interview this is even more important in phone interviews.  It is way better to stay quiet for a minute and think about what you want to say before opening your mouth and saying UMMMM!  It's so important in phone interviews because all the person on the other side of the phone has to go on is your voice, so don't um!

  1. These tips rock. I've had many phone interviews in my day so I can agree with these. The "have everything on hand" tip is essential!
