ART: Sparkle and Spin Exhibition Review

Today was horrible and rainy, none of my friends are at home right now and my Mother was terribly selfish and went off to work leaving me in the house all by myself.  So I jumped in my car and went to a local gallery, had a wander then thought I would do a blog review on the exhibit I saw.

I went to Gracefield Art Centre in Dumfries, which you can read all about here.

And the exhibition I saw was in Gallery Two, it was the Sparkle and Spin amazing kid friendly exhibition by Paola McClure,

Sparkle and Spin is a children's book which inspired McClure and she's explored the themes of large alien like texture creatures.

Look at these crazy creatures!  You can really see the emotion and differences in them as you walk around.

The thing I really liked about the exhibit was how kid friendly it was, it would be the perfect place to take your children either for something to do or for a fun introduction to art.

Around the sculptures there were different interactive challenges dotted about.  Whether it was a skeleton of a doll they could build with different pieces or a board of words and fabrics asking them to think about texture.  My favourite was a little puzzle you had to rearrange.

Overall I really liked the exhibit and if you or your family are looking for something to do in Dumfries and Galloway before the 3rd of May (when Sparkle and Spin runs to) then I would really recommend checking out Gracefield, especially on a week day.  I went on a Tuesday and I was the only person in Gallery 2.

Robot Rock

Hello!  This is my first look in a while- essays and all that.  So in my Spring Break I've ran away to Northern Ireland for a couple of days, and this is my first look here.

I've been shopping all day - haul post to come - so we just pulled the car into a wee hide away where we take the dog for a walk.  We were going to go into the woods for a moody shoot but it was rainy and cold and I was tired (anyone who knows me knows this makes a grumpy Kathryn).  So we just jumped out the car and used these boulders and they turned out pretty well didn't they?  It's really nice!

So I'm wearing:
Primark jodhpurs
H&M vest
A Robot Cardigan which I bought from a boutique called Liberty Blue in Belfast

But here's the photos!

My Lookbook Rant

Everyone be prepared for my little rant about Lookbook, I figure that if you can't have a rant on your blog where can you?  Since it is the ultimate forum for self indulgence I might as well indulge!

So has anyone else been getting really annoyed with Lookbook recently?  I mean every time I'm on there I'm reporting look after look for not conforming to basic guidelines.  Just tonight (and what prompted this post) I had to flag a post which was a family photo on a holiday somewhere - I'm talking Mum, Dad and two kiddies... Very nice but let's keep that sort of stuff on Facebook, not on a fashion site.

All of this has meant that going on LB is no longer relaxing and nice to chill out with on a study break but it's actually hard work.  I feel as though I'm a one woman censor machine trying to just see some outfits!

On top of all that lately LB has been really glitchy, I'm often unable to upload a look for days at a time and their in program editing software is just as bad.

I can't be the only one getting annoyed with it am I?  I'm actually considering jumping ship, even before the glitches it seemed to be filling up with low quality images with day to day images - Lookbook used to be full of exciting and new looks and bloggers, but not so much any more.

Anyway, rant over.  I'm sorry for my little whine but sometimes you just have to!

My Jack Wills Sale Picks

One of my favourite brands - Jack Wills - has harassing me almost daily for the past wee while about their ridiculously good sale that's been going on.  So I have finally cracked and looked at the site today!

So I decided to put a wee post together showing you my favourite picks from the sale in an effort to stop me buying.

First up you can see their sale page here.

My first pick is the Allston Dress which is only £24.

What a cute little summer dress, everyone likes denim and everyone likes polka dots.  So a win - win yeah?

It also comes in this very cute colour- I really don't know which one I prefer, although this one is £34.

Now for what be my controversial pick - the Colby Crew which is £29.

Mustard is one of my favourite colours for clothes, and this is a really nice twist with the roses and JACK print.  It'll be my controversial pick since some [crazy] people hate mustard and others don't like the Jack branding.  But I like it.

And finally we have the Thurley Dress which is £39 in the sale.

This is a classic cut with a classic print - everyone loves anchors.  This is a little smarter and fitted so would make a perfect first date outfit - day or night.

Hope you liked my picks!  In other news I just broke 20 000 views, which is awesome!  So thank you to everyone who reads my posts, thank you for your support and as always if you have any suggestions as to what you would like to see more of on Liquid Grain, let me know!

What's In My Make Up Bag?

Sorry for being a bit late with posting this- it took forever to upload due to the joys of the internet and the fact I was streaming Veronica Mars all day.  So my own fault really.
Here is my What's In my Make Up Bag video - I decided to go for a video since the photos were taking ages and I have been feeling really ill this week so easiness is always best.

I think I've covered most of the products in the video, but if you want actual details give me a tweet @liquidgrain or comment below!

Lush Hero Products

A bit of a different post today, I'm treading a bit on the toes of all you beauty bloggers.  But anyway everyone knows Lush is amazing, and since it's on every high street out there it's a good place to get awesome products for everyone.

My two picks are: Ultrabland and Breath of Fresh Air

First up is Ultrabland:

To be honest I have never not seen this on a Lush / face care / favourite list ever.  And there's a reason for that, it's amazing.  You can do whatever you want with this cleanser and it will do it!  So I'll just tell you how I use it.  I use it at night, even when I don't have any make up on and I use my fingers to massage it on to my face.  It takes off my waterproof make up really well.  You can use water to take it off, or a toner like I do - Breath of Fresh Air.  I know most people use it at night because it can sometimes leave a greasy finish on the skin which doesn't matter a night but obviously in the morning it's more of a big deal.

Now we have Breath of Fresh Air:

Which is actually my favourite thing ever.  I have really sensitive skin so I struggle with finding a toner which isn't too harsh but still freshens my face up.  And this really does it, I sometimes just use it during the day if I've been in the library and feeling a bit bleh.  It is just so refreshing and nice to use, and it takes off Ultrabland nice and fully.

So give me some feedback on my first beauty post?  Okay?  Shall I do it again?

Pictures of My Face

Sorry for the weekend of radio silence this weekend.  I was up at Aberdeen with my uni shooting team and then a ball on Saturday evening where all the Scottish university teams come together for food, drinks, prizes and of course a celidh- believe me I have the bruises to prove it!

Here was my arm the next morning - I really don't know how I managed it, or how I got through a match the next day.  Anyway we had a great weekend and managed to come back with lots of shiny things.  If you want to follow my sporting side of my life, you can like my athlete facebook page here if you want.

But anyway, since this is a bit of a nothing post and don't really have much to say I thought I would post up some portrait shots I have had kicking about for a while, but I haven't had a clue what to do with them.  So why not now?

As usual my photographer was Matty, you can see his Facebook here.

These shots were taken in about two minutes on a very windy day while we waited for a friend at the beach.  Then they were used for some editing practice - hence the different finishes on them, but they are quite nice anyway!

And finally what I am calling the Barbour catalogue look!

Afternoon Tea at the Old Course, St Andrews

This weekend I was lucky enough to be treated to a very special experience- Afternoon Tea at the Old Course Hotel.  One of my best friends Sophie was turning 21 and took a lovely group of girls to the Old Course for a treat!

The Old Course is the premium location in St Andrews, not only an amazing hotel but in the prime location of the home of golf.

Once you arrive you are seated in an amazing conservatory overlooking the Golf Course and the beach and given the choice between the Classic Afternoon Tea or the Champagne option.  Since it was a celebration we went for champagne!

Next we had to choose our drink from a list of different teas and coffees, don't worry about the difficult choice it's unlimited hot drinks so you can fill yourself with as many different teas as possible.  I'm not a big tea drinker so I went for the delicious chai tea.

Then the main event came out - the cake stand!  Doesn't it look great?

In case you have never had afternoon tea before you start at the bottom and then work up.  So for us that was sandwiches!  And good sandwiches they were, nice and soft bread with the crusts cut off.  We got cucumber and cream cheese, ham and chutney, egg mayonnaise and my favourite - smoked salmon!

Then we moved up to the middle layer, which was scrummy!  You got a fruit and a plain scone as well as a pancake.  And to put on top - buckets of clotted cream and jam!

Now for the main event- the cakes!

My favourite was a tiramisu style slice, with crunchy hazel nuts on the top.

Then I had the pear and almond macaroon, which was delicious!

My favourite was this one - a tangy passion fruit tarte with a crunchy passion fruit brittle on top.  Absolutely brilliant!

And now the tangerine crumble, which wasn't the best for me.  It was quite heavy and difficult to eat.

And a bit of a more savoury finish - green tea cake.  Which was really nice, although doesn't look the most appealing!

Afternoon tea at the old course was amazing!  It was a thoroughly enjoyable day out and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a special day out in St Andrews.  If you are interested you can find out more information here.  The Classic Afternoon Tea is £20 and the champagne option is £32.

Oh and I forgot to mention - there is a harpist to serenade you throughout your tea!

Railings and Roundabouts

Okay I lied, no roundabouts but some very pretty railings in this shoot.  Look at this lovely wee spot we found in St Andrews.  It is in a little spot next to Macintosh Hall between Market and North Street.  So cute!

We decided to shoot here since the boy had the image of railings in his head and wouldn't rest until we found some!  He just got a fancy new full frame camera so wants to shoot everything in nicely composed shots!

Today I am wearing this peplum top which comes up time and time again but I can't remember the brand of it off the top of my head but I do love the shop it's from.  It's from Liberty Blue in Belfast, and every time I'm there I always have to go in and have a shop!

Standard New Look jeans, River Island boots and LV bag.  You've seen them all before I'm afraid.

Windy Walk In St Andrews

Today we went for a lovely wee walk in St Andrews down the beach and the harbour - well that's what we thought until we went outside.  And it got very windy very quickly!  But I thought I would do a wee post about it anyway.

Ten steps out of my house and look at the pretty beach I have!

So we wandered down the beach path until we got to the harbour.  This is still a working harbour, although not as busy as Anstruther, which you can see my harbour pics from here.
All the rain we've been having has made the water so brown and yucky!

Down the harbour, next to the pier was really windy.  So I hid behind a house and took a selfie to show you how windy it was!

It suits me no?

So we had a little poke around the nets in the harbour and found a bunch of very fat birds who must just live and eat in the nets!  Then we had a walk down the pier and beach.

It was a fun walk down the beach, even though it was very windy!  But always fun!

And here is a cute little picture of me and my friend Sophie at the end of the pier.  Aren't we cute?
